Beyond the Tower

The tower stands dark and foreboding, tall and strong,
And I can’t climb the walls no matter how much I long,
And so trapped inside I cry for help to right the wrong;
So one day soon I will once again join the joyful throng

Yes, these walls stretch up into the sky
So far above me and I understand why:
That no resident will ever say goodbye

But the builder never counted on wings
To bring this man out with song to sing,
Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia to God ‘n king!

So help me now my Lord, even now to set me free
To be all that you would have me be, with reverie
Beyond these cold walls for all of the world to see!

Welcome to the City of Light

Welcome to the City of Light where bright rules the day
Every step along the way, where the soul can safely stay,
Where one can rest in an extraordinary nest of serenity,
Where there is plenty of love and peace that never cease
Here in this place, where the pace is slow and beautiful,
And joy dutiful to attend every step and the mind is kept
From all alarm as fear is dispersed by the light ever near
To the heart with no false start in any part of joyous day;
And where the night is absent of all fright and very calm,
Which is a healing balm to the soul … in the City of Light

Desire: To Want You More . . .

Do you know what it is like to want someone
More than anyone else in the whole world?

Your ways and the ray of your face
Fills the horizon of my day . . .
And there is something in the stillness
Of the night that pulls me tight to you,
And there seems to be all too few
Of these moments with you, too!

Do you know what it is like to want someone
More than anyone else in the whole world?

I look deep into your emerald eyes
And I spy eternity in fraternity with you,
And how else could it be for you and me?
And you look in my eyes and spy longing,
Deep longing to belong only to you, too,
And you knew it would be this way, true?

Do you know what it is like to want someone
More than anyone else in the whole world?

I would have frozen had I not been chosen
By you in love above all love . . .
When I was so sick, you picked me up
And carried me home, your home, my home
And I could now write a tome about you,
Beloved, ever hovering over and covering me

Ah! Yes, of course you know, and know that I know
What it is to want someone as much as I want you . . .

So I Belong to You

As the stars belong to the night and light to the day,
So I say, ‘I belong to you,’ and I long to be with you,
So, too, I will be true to you, my one and only love,
My dove from above, who hovers and covers me,
Always close at hand with bands of compassion
In passion of fire that never tires or ever wanes
In nearly insane affection but with no affectation
In connection with the best part of heart and soul,
Filling that hole with which I have lived for so long,
Giving me your own song sung sweet in meeting me
Each and every moment as I breathe in the fragrance
Of your undying devotion in unending motion forever!

Mystery of the Beloved

Undomesticated, wild and mysterious you are, my Beloved;
Unsophisticated yet wisdom incarnate, my brightest star;
Your eyes open to unfathomable depths and yet not bizarre
As they carry kindness and understanding, comprehending
Every detail of my life along this trail in the tale that is told,
And you are so very bold but gentle, warm and never cold;
And do you not remold me and make me new every morn?
Ah! I am born again and again and only begin now to know
That this is not mere show but truth unfolding like a flower
As with you all is possible and the impossible simply is not,
And you have bought my very soul with your spilling love
From above, saturating me in fine crimson wine of heaven,
And for all of this I love you with an undying love, Beloved!

Wild Love

Ah! You are not tame, my Beloved, nor do you play games,
But though you are wild, you can also be as mild as a child
And gentle as the Dove, though you’re the Lion from above,
So I do not approach you in fear when you are so very near;
With tears of joy in my eyes I lay my head upon your bosom
And sleep in peace and never cease to be thankful for you;
You hold me tight in the might of your nail-pierced arms,
Safe from all harms and alarms, and I am deeply enchanted
In your keep as I reap the blessings of the highest heavens
Leavened with love from above and compassion unending,
And you are always sending me gifts to lift my very spirit,
So how can I thank you, my Lion Lover, but to love you, too?

Love of the Beloved

In Celebration of Easter

How can it be that I should see the love you have for me?
That you would take me in your arms away from all harm
With no need for alarm is a charm no money could buy,
And freely I sing gleefully of your passionate compassion
That you do not ration but give liberally that I might live
So peacefully within your bright light, my saving Knight!
And so my very heart takes flight with no fight or fright
As your love takes me higher and kindles fire in my soul
Where there was a gaping hole until you stole me away
On the day I was lying and dying, crying at my loss of life;
Yes, you found me bound to the nefarious angel of death,
Breathing my last breath, then you gave me your breath
That I might live again and forevermore with you, in you,
By you and for you, O Beloved and holy lovely Shepherd!
. . .
O how can it be that I would see the love you have for me?

Flowing Into One Another … Your Love

Oh I prayed and thought you didn’t hear, my Shepherd so dear;
So I screamed and fell, yet you still felt so very far away.
I cried, lamented, and my very soul was gripped in abject fear;
In oppressive darkness I laid down with my own ending so near.

Ah, do we embrace before ere we touch? Sweet kiss
In the Eye of the Mind before lips ever meet?
Like the oceans and the river and the mountain
Springs, do we flow into one another, fulfilling?

You awakened me from my deathly slumber and enabled me to see;
You moved in the night in heavenly light, and answered my plea;
You opened my eyes, breathing in me life in timeless eternity,
So your Spirit rushes in, and in your love is my only safety.

Ah, shall we laugh and cry like the wind and the rain?
Play like the moonlight across sweet mountain lake?
Shall we belong to each other, both giving and receiving,
Never living apart, no more than branch without tree?

Always in Your Love

As the stars shine brightly in the night sky,
So you shine in my heart and every part
Of my being, seeing me as I am in your love,
My heavenly Dove, spreading your wings
Around me to enfold me, bringing your joy,
Singing your sweet songs so melodically,
Rhythmically in tune with my very being
So that I am left kneeling in your presence
With the essence of all that I am and will be
In a perfect love from above earth and sky
That raises me high above into the heavens,
As the stars shine brightly in the night sky,
And you shine in my heart and every part
Of my being, seeing me as I am in your love
In your love – always in your love, my Dove

Battlefield Heart

Where have all the birds gone with their morning song?
Why are the days so long and the winds cold and strong?
And why does my spirit belong to the night with blight?

Rise up, O heart, and take your part in the battle fought!
This war has been brought to your own doorstep so fight
With all of your might even with no termination in sight!

Struggle with determination to victory over damnation,
And surely your Beloved will come to you in battle array
To lead your soul to bright light and the victor’s crown!

Come with the dawn, mighty Warrior
Into the foyer of my heart with sword
And reprimand this sickly, thick dark
By your powerful Word of command!

And my Beloved shall bring to me again the morning song,
And fill my days with love from above, so warm and strong,
And in my spirit there shall be no more night with blight. . .
